Eligibility:
This sculpture workshop is designed to introduce the history, concepts, processes, techniques, materials,
and tools associated with the creation of three dimensional forms in wood. Emphasis is placed on idea
conceptualization and the utilization of sculptural processes and techniques associated with the use of
traditional and new technologies in the creation of wood sculpture.
The 2009 Summer Wood Sculpture Workshop is open to the general public 18 years and older. Basic
knowledge of wood sculpture is helpful, but not mandatory. Applicants must be able to physically handle
heavy objects and power tools.
Workshop Objectives:
1. To provide artists with the opportunity to work and study under a Master Artist in their field.
2. To provide participants with creative experiences in the utilization of various concepts, processes,
techniques, tools and materials in the production of wood forms.
3. To introduce the use of various three dimensional drawing and modeling techniques useful in the
conceptualization of ideas in wood.
4. To introduce the participant to a vocabulary indigenous to sculpture, its processes, concepts, tools,
materials, and techniques.
5. To introduce the application of design concepts as a foundation for the conceptualization and
creation of wood sculpture.
6. To introduce a selected history of sculpture in wood.
7. To introduce artists to the Atlanta Arts Community.
Workshop Schedule M-F:
Guided Workshops will take place M-W from 10AM to 6PM.
Lunch will be provided daily from 1:15 to 3PM.
Thursday and Fridays are set aside for Free Work and local Atlanta Artists Studio Visits
Guided Workshop instruction will cover the following:
Introduction to Odeleye Sculpture Studios
Review of the history of sculpture in wood
The Design process: drawing, modeling and image transfers
Tool and Machine demonstrations and wood preparation
The carving and assemblage process
Wood working by all participants
Wood finishing techniques
Summary review
Closing critique
